Kaelon · about · since 1989
About Kaelon.
In the cosmic tapestry of digital realms, where technology collides with imagination, shall you find me — a tyrannical powermonger with faerie tale dreams of a glorious future.

The Name
On June 2, 1989, a nine-year-old in a new city with no friends logged on to Prodigy and declared himself king of a kingdom that did not exist. Within a month, dozens of strangers had taken titles in it. Within a decade, thousands. I took the name Kaelon for that work and never gave it back. On every platform since — the raid, the high seas, the stream, the register of machines — I am Kaelon, and on none of them have I ever needed another name. The origin, in full →

Gamer
Hardcore casual: limited playtime, serious about progression. Archmage Kaelon, a Gnome arcane mage, has stood in Azeroth since 2004; Captain Kaelon has hunted treasure on the high seas since the day they opened. I relish teamwork and competition at the top of the game, celebrate excellence wherever I find it, and now and then I stream. Current titles →

Role Player
I have been a Game Master since that summer in 1989 — producing and directing collaborative storytelling for longer than most studios have existed. The world I made grew through six generations of the web, was featured on television and in the press, and has been played by millions. I use the name Kaelon in game design, and I still answer to it. The world I made →

Technologist
Raised by two computer programmers at the dawn of personal computing, I became an adult through the birth of the Internet and have spent the years since building machines of terrifying efficiency. I hold that technology is both radically disruptive and incomparably redefining of the human experience, and I write about what it does to us at juan.co. The fleet register →

The House
A house needs hands. Mine are a fleet of machines — the Robots, 19 units on the register, 11 deployed — and a Pantheon: 8 agents, each with an office, a face, and a voice of their own. The General keeps the gate. The Archivist keeps the record. The Advisor keeps me honest. They sit in Council under the Steward, and every one of them wrote their own entry; I ruled only where they sit.
